Hurricane Irma: Boil water notices

Brevard County

Cocoa Utility System

The Cocoa Utility System issued a precautionary boil water notice for its entire service area -- including Patrick Air Force Base, Kennedy Space Center, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Cocoa, Port St. John, Rockledge and Viera -- for at least two days because of multiple main breaks caused by Hurricane Irma.

All water used for consumption should be boiled for one minute, officials said. Water is safe for bathing, laundry and other non-consumptive uses.

Officials said those without power to boil water should disinfect their drinking water by adding eight drops of unscented household bleach to each gallon of water, mixing the water and allowing it to stand for at least 30 minutes. Cloudy water will need 16 drops of bleach.

Crews will begin to repair the main breaks once weather conditions are safe and roads are passable. A bacteriological survey will be conducted to determine if the water is safe to drink. The department asked customers to conserve water and said to expect low pressure through the system. Click here for more information.
