BREAKING: Orlando police officer shot; gunman holding 4 children hostage

An Orlando police officer was shot by a gunman who is holding four children hostage inside an apartment complex, police said.

Orlando police Chief John Mina said officers responded to a domestic dispute at 11:45 p.m. on Sunday the Westbrook Apartments on Eaglesmere Drive, near South Kirkman Road.

Mina said the shooter is holding four children, ages 1, 7, 10 and 12, hostage inside an apartment.

Mina said hostage negotiations are underway and the officers' main concern is with the children.

Police said the injured officer is out of surgery and is expected to survive. Mina said the officer’s injuries are “serious and significant” and asked for prayers from the community.
