Tesla has unveiled its new Cybercab, a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, at a private event in Austin on Thursday (September 3). This marks a significant step for the electric vehicle manufacturer as it expands its robotaxi fleet. The Cybercab is currently operating in limited areas of Austin, with plans for broader deployment in the future.
The Cybercab, a two-seat electric vehicle, relies entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software. It represents a bold move by Tesla to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology. Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, emphasized the vehicle's futuristic design and functionality, stating, "No steering wheel, no pedals," in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The launch event was invitation-only, showcasing the vehicle to select guests and fans.
Tesla's stock rose more than 5% before the event, reflecting investor optimism about the Cybercab's potential impact on the company's autonomous vehicle ride service, which currently operates in parts of Texas and Florida. However, the rollout faces challenges, as Tesla must demonstrate that its camera-only system can safely navigate streets and avoid pedestrians, unlike competitors like Waymo and Zoox, which use additional technologies such as lidar and radar.
Despite the technological advancements, public acceptance remains a hurdle. A Pew Research Center survey found that 70% of U.S. adults are uncomfortable with the idea of riding in a driverless car. Tesla is betting on its technology and the appeal of its brand to overcome these concerns.
The Cybercab's launch comes as Tesla aims to expand its unsupervised robotaxi fleet, which has grown significantly in recent months. According to a Yahoo Finance report, Tesla has registered around 40 additional Cybercabs for commercial operation in Texas. The company plans to introduce the service in other cities, including Houston and Dallas, as it seeks to compete with industry leaders.
While the Cybercab represents a leap forward in autonomous vehicle technology, regulatory approval remains a critical factor. Tesla has yet to receive full approval for its self-driving software in many regions, and ongoing investigations into its safety could impact the rollout.
