Florida law enforcement is stepping into high-tech surveillance with consumer gear. Public records posted to the investigative platform MuckRock reveal that at least two Florida sheriff's departments have quietly purchased Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses for their personnel.
The Miami New Times broke down where the high-tech eyewear went:
- Broward County: The Sheriff's Office bought several pairs off Amazon for an undercover Internet Crimes Against Children unit. When asked for their official usage policies, department spokespersons blocked the request, citing public records exemptions for "surveillance techniques."
- Okeechobee County: The department acquired a half-dozen pairs, though they claim the devices are strictly used by IT personnel for remote troubleshooting.
The Ultimate Accountability Blindspot?
Privacy advocates are fiercely pushing back. Unlike bulky, highly visible police body cameras, these smart glasses look exactly like normal streetwear. While Meta includes a small LED light to signal when video recording is active, critics warn it is easily missed in crowds or covered up by users.
