Charlie Puth is opening up about his decision to quit drinking.

In a candid conversation with Rolling Stone published Tuesday (January 20), the "Changes" singer explained how he gave up drinking four years ago after a night out in New York City left him with the "worst hangover" he's ever had, E! News reports. Puth was preparing to release his 2022 album Charlie and wanted to "rage" in celebration; however, he seemingly came to regret the decision the next morning.

"I don't drink at all. I think it clouds my judgment," he said. "But it was right before the third album was about to come out, and I was like, 'I'm just gonna have a rager.' I woke up with the worst hangover I've ever felt in my life. It lasted for, I think, two days."

The "Light Switch" musician also shared that seeing photos of himself with "people I didn't even know" was another factor that added to his decision to stop drinking.

"I remember they all wanted to get coffee the next morning, in a scene-y part of town... I saw them all eating, and then I just turned the other way and walked back to the hotel and just stayed there by myself for a couple days," he said, adding, "It's hard to describe, but after years of surrounding myself with the wrong things and saying the wrong things, it's profound when it just all comes to a screeching halt one day at 30 years old in New York City."

Puth is getting ready for some more major changes in his life. Not only is he releasing his fourth studio album Whatever's Clever! this spring, he and wife Brooke Sansone are also expecting their first child together.

Whatever's Clever! drops March 27.
