TAMPA -- Tampa's mayor updates the city on crime prevention, and defends a controversial anti-crime initiative.
The current SAFE program, which includes neighborhood associations as well as apartments and condos, replaced one that notified landlords about tenants' criminal records. That earlier program is under federal investigation.
Mayor Castor says crime dropped by more a third in participating apartments, compared to about 22 percent in those that didn't take part in that earlier program.
She countered reports of hundreds of tenants being evicted over arrest records, saying the city attorney found only four evictions based on criminal activity out of 529 notices to landlords.
