The "New York Times" says President Trump bragged about firing FBI Director James Comey, saying Comey was "crazy, a real nut job." As Trump met with two Russian officials last week, he also reportedly said firing Comey relieved "great pressure" on him with regards to the Russian investigation.
The Times says that the White House document that contained Trump's comments was based on notes taken from inside the Oval Office.
The White House released a statement saying Comey had put unnecessary pressure on the President's ability to conduct diplomacy with Russia, but spokesman Sean Spicer did not dispute the accuracy of the story. The firestorm that followed Comey's firing prompted the appointment of a special counsel to oversee the investigation of Russian meddling in the presidential campaign.
